Online Bingo and Corresponding Laws

Casablanca is a famous movie that identifies hypocrisy in the justice system. One scene shows the police chief informing the cafe owner that the cafe is being closed. Upon further inquiry, the owner is told that engaging in gambling is illegal. However, the police chief was accepting his earnings from betting at that cafe. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, of 2006 represents the same hypocritical behavior.

This bill, which was introduced under questionable methods, exposes a shocking level of hypocrisy in which so many lawmakers were involved. The UIGEA was attached to the Port Security Act. Although the Port Security Act was a desirable method to increase the security of our ports, the tactics used to introduce the UIGEA were inexcusable. As the UIGEA was added to the Port Security Act in the dead of night, just before the Port Security Act was presented to congress, most members were completely oblivious to the UIGEA's existence.

Senator Bill Frist (R-Tenn) is just one example of the hypocrisy attached to the UIGEA. Senator Frist was involved in multiple violations of campaign finance law. How can a lawmaker, who violates the law, be trusted to introduce new law? His arguments in support of the Uniform Internet Gambling Enforcement Act were unfounded and quite absurd.

Conservatives, like Senator Frist, claim that online gambling is another method of supporting terrorism. The 2006 administration pulled the terrorism card when it wanted to justify the introduction of bills designed to infringe upon the rights guaranteed by the US Constitution. Online gambling is yet to be associated with any event of terrorism.

Senator Frist was, not surprisingly, unavailable for comment. He made a statement indicating that online gaming was more abhorrent than fixed, land based casinos. Software has been updated in order to inhibit minors from gaining access to the online casinos, thereby rendering Senator Frist's objection that minors could gamble as a moot point.

Using online bingo as an example, you can see how government interference is unacceptable. Traditional bingo has long been used by several entities as a tremendous fund raising tool. It is just one of the many tolerable gambling venues.

Unfortunately, traditional bingo is not accessible to everyone. The brick and mortar locations have fixed times and days available for play. Use of the internet is a logical resolution to this problem.

Barney Frank (D-Mass) has introduced a new bill that would effectively negate the Uniform Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. What is the one way to ensure any activity's existence? Tax it! By establishing a method to tax the gaming revenues, all parties benefit.

In the alternative, the US Constitution does allow for citizens to request from the government compensation for grievances inflicted by the government. Lawsuits have been filed which seek an injunction which would stop the UIGEA. Other methods available to petition the government include contacting your senator or representative. Inform them of your opinions. Never underestimate your power to influence change.
